MODULE 2 - SPINAL DIAGNOSIS (LUMBOPELVIC)

The core focus of chiropractors has always been the spine, yet many still find diagnosing spinal conditions to be a minefield of confusion and contradiction. In this Module we will unveil the latest scientific thinking and help you navigate this complex area. After all, the general public expects you to be knowledgeable in the field of spinal disorders - this Module will make it truly so.

Would you like greater certainty when recommending care to your patients? Have you considered how much your tissue diagnosis really matters when it comes to giving a prognosis? Would you like to know which clinical tests are truly reliable? How does an adjustment help a patient who has torn the connective tissue of an intervertebral disc? Can sacroiliac joints really 'go out of alignment'? If not, then what actually happens to them? Are you comfortable explaining what you do to another health care professional using the language of science and free from jargon?

In the Spinal Diagnosis Module you'll learn how to use the orthopaedic and neurological examination as more than just a search for end-stage pathology (such as space-occupying lesions or radiculopathy). That’s why this Module consistently reinforces the neurological mechanisms that underpin the control of posture and joint stability. You will also learn the essentials of interpreting MRI scans - one of the most valuable tools for making your diagnosis, and your prognosis.

So join Dr Anthony Nicholson for an inspiring weekend that will change how you think and how you practice.

ALL NEW CONTENT - THIS MODULE HAS BEEN ENTIRELY REWRITTEN

SOPHISTICATED DIAGNOSIS
BECOME A TRUE EXPERT IN SPINAL DISORDERS
The Spinal Diagnosis Module has been completely rewritten and upgraded, and is now presented in a 'case-based' format.

The best way to learn something is by doing. So you will hone your diagnostic thinking by solving 6 challenging cases and learning along the way. Each clinical scenario represents a common situation that you'd be expected to have great proficiency in managing.

The topics include:
  1. DISC LESIONS WITHOUT NEURAL COMPRESSION
How and why does the disc wall become painful? What is a 'leaky disc'? How does sciatica occur without nerve compression? What are Modic changes? What do you look for on MRI? Can your adjustments change anything?
  1. DISC LESIONS WITH NEURAL COMPRESSION
Why does the shape and size of disc herniation matter? What MRI features allow you to predict the outcome (or the need for surgery)? How do the different types of disc herniation present clinically?
  1. FACET JOINT LESIONS
What actually causes facet joint pain? What can you see on MRI? How can facet joint lesions cause true sciatica (i.e. radicular pain - not just referred pain)? What is the role of instability? How do adjustments create greater spinal stability and control?
  1. SACROILIAC JOINT LESIONS
How much do sacroiliac joints move? Where does the pain come from? Are there any reliable sacroiliac tests? How do you differentiate between sacroiliac pain and other pain sources in the lower back? Can the sacroiliac joints directly influence knee function?
  1. SPONDYLOLYSIS AND SPONDYLOLISTHESIS
What causes a spondylolysis? Does the defect itself actually hurt? If not, what is hurting? Can MRI help us to see the fracture before it takes place? What are the implications of these two conditions?
  1. LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS
How does spinal stenosis exert its effects? What is the mechanism of pain? Can adjustments actually influence this process? Is surgery necessary? How would you make this decision? What is the role of MRI, and what would you look for?
In each of these scenarios you’ll be guided through a clinical thinking process and introduced to the most important diagnostic distinctions. You will learn how to interpret the key MRI findings that accompany each of these conditions, and build your confidence in ordering advanced imaging. You will understand how and when to make the decision to refer for a steroid injection, and appreciate the pros and cons of surgery.

The currency of respect in health care is diagnostic expertise. But you also need a strategy to demonstrate your value as a problem solver (particularly to the patient's GP). This Module will equip you with the knowledge and tools to skilfully navigate the complex world of spinal diagnosis. You’ll also take away useful skills for communicating your knowledge and solidifying your positioning as the spine expert.
